Dog Obedience Class

Dog Obedience class is an eight week class taught from 7:00-8:00 p.m.  This class will cover areas like focus, sit, stay, come, down, off, and heal.  Each dog that completes the class and passes the test at the end of class will receive a certificate of completion.  For dates when the next dog class will start visit the Dog Class Calendar for more information. These lessons are designed to make a well mannered pet out of your dog by forming a common language between you and your dog called OBEDIENCE.

We will meet each week for 1 hour for 7-8 weeks depending on how quickly you and your dog grasp the training concepts. For the cost of the class please Contact Smart Paws. Whether the dog graduates from class or not he/she is welcome to attend any other basic obedience class as much as he or she wants, as long as we have classes offered. Some past alumni have come for new problems, old, or just to have fun!!

You will receive Homework sheets with each lesson. These sheets will help you get the most out of your lessons.

Motivational training is used with Praise as the motivation. I also will teach you proper discipline because you need a balance of both. I do not allow any hitting or swatting, but will show you what works and try to do everything from the dog’s point of view.

Basic Obedience: covers the typical exercises we will do on lead:

             "Off" Command

             Focus Heeling

             Right & Left Turns

             About Turns

             Sit

             Down

             Stay

             Recall

Problem correcting: Whether it’s the typical things dogs do such as digging, chewing, chasing, barking, growling, biting etc. or the not so typical, I will try to narrow down the reason or reasons and then try to change “why” the dog is doing what it’s doing. Otherwise the problem or problems will continue or worsen.

House Obedience: Teaches the dog patience and manners. Think of examples of when company comes over, and either you have to put your dog up or continuously apologizing for him or her jumping up or continuously barking etc. Most people would like their dog to be apart of what takes place, not to be isolated off, or either be a nuisance.

Equipment needed:

6 Foot standard leash  (Nylon or Leather)

Training Collar / Harness: either Choke Collar, Pinch Collar, Check Choke Collar or Easy Walk Harness**

12-15 foot long line for distance training in latter sessions

** = The Training Collar used will depend on what works best for your dog.
